Have you ever dreamed of gliding over the sea at high speed, dominating the waves and wind? Windsurfing is one of the most popular water sports in Ibiza, as the pitiuso climate is ideal for both beginners and experts windsurfers. In this article we tell about our experience learning to sail. The Ascanio windsurfing Surf School course in only 5 classes long (3 lessons and 2 practical sessions), so we had to give it a shot.

Day 1 Theory and stability: The basics are paramount and Ascanio, our windsurfing instructor, knows this well. No surprise then that during the first class he pays particular attention to, and explains patiently to his students, the theory of the sport (wind direction, material position …). Then comes our turn to mount the board, as skilfully as expected: learning to keep up and directing the sail are the main points of this lesson.

Day 2 First try. Having learned the theory, the second day Ascanio starts off us off sailing with our boards tied to his (in the case of a private lesson of course), or tying up to multiple boards if it’s a group session. Following his course we get the first sensations of windsurfing: the wind pushes us and we begin to imitate Ascanio’s movements by opening and closing the sail to direct course and speed.

Day 3 Confidence: While the time it takes to learn will vary from person to person in the third class all students begin to get some confidence on the board. We learn to tack and jibe (making turns on both sides) and to direct its course. That’s when we begin to get a real sense of just how intense this sport can be.

4 and 5 Control and Freedom: the course will normally end on the third class but Ascanio Surf School has given Ayudaenibiza readers an additional two days of practice in order to consolidate what has been learned in the three days before. During the last two sessions we begin to gain control and navigate freely. We know what it is to sail, but we still have much to learn. For those who want to learn more, Ascanio Surf School also offers courses for advanced levels.

Special offer for readers of Ayudaenibiza: windsurfing course (3 classes) + 2 sessions of practice: 180 euros.
